Which UK savings platforms accept US citizens
Last checkedRaisin UK declines US citizens, and so do the three savings platforms it runs under other names: AJ Bell Cash savings hub, Aviva Save and Smart Savings from Willis Owen. One eligibility policy closes four doors that look separate on a comparison site. Opening a savings account directly with a bank is the route that works: 52 of the 61 other savings providers checked on the savings account page accept US citizens.
Why one policy closes them all
A savings platform is a single account through which you open fixed and easy access savings with several banks at once. The platform checks who you are and holds the relationship; the banks on its panel take the deposits. When one marketplace runs a platform under another company's name, the eligibility test is the marketplace's, and each platform repeats it in its own terms, as the table below quotes.
The test that shuts out an American is usually sole UK tax residency, not citizenship. The US taxes its citizens wherever they live, so a US citizen living here is tax resident in both countries and cannot declare the UK as their only one. Some platforms go further and name US citizenship or US persons outright.
The banks on a platform's panel are a separate question. A bank you cannot reach through a platform may accept you when you apply to it directly, and the savings account page has each bank's own verdict.
Raisin UK and the three platforms it runs
| Platform | Powered by | Verdict for a US citizen | Why, from its own terms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raisin UK Raisin UK's own site (opens in a new tab) | Its own marketplace | Declines US citizens | Raisin UK requires sole UK tax residency to open its marketplace account, and that account is the gateway to every partner bank on its panel, so the whole platform is closed even where a partner bank would accept you directly. Declines US citizens | AJ Bell's Cash savings hub runs on Raisin UK's platform, and its terms admit only someone who is solely a UK resident for tax purposes. The US taxes its citizens wherever they live, so a US citizen here is tax resident in both countries and cannot give that answer. Declines US citizens | Smart Savings is Raisin UK under the Willis Owen name, and registration asks you to confirm two things a US citizen cannot: that you are solely tax resident in the UK, and that you are not a US person as the IRS defines one. What works instead
Go to the bank. A savings account opened directly is reported under FATCA like any other UK account, which is routine for a bank and not a reason to decline. The savings account page lists every provider checked with its verdict, rates and the date each was read, and the cash ISA page does the same for the tax-free wrapper, which the US does not treat as tax-free.
New and changed accounts, monthly.
Providers change who they will take, and nobody tracks it. Momo does. One email a month with what moved, plus the occasional note on tax and money for US citizens in the UK.
How Momo handles your address: privacy policy.
