Which Metro Bank accounts accept US citizens
Last checkedMetro Bank has been checked for US citizens across 4 account types. All 4 are open to a US person (1 with strings).
If you already have an account with Metro Bank, a second one there is usually the easier application, because Metro Bank has already checked who you are. Each account below carries its verdict, the evidence behind it and the date it was checked.

Current accounts
Compare with other providersMetro Bank asks for 18 or over, UK residency and proof of identity and address. Its self-certification form has a place for the United States and a US tax number, so a US citizen is a reporting case rather than an excluded one.

Savings accounts
Compare with other providersMetro Bank's instant access savings asks only that you are 16 or over and resident in the UK, with no Metro current account required; its account-opening guidance expects some applicants to be tax resident elsewhere as well as the UK, and nothing published rules out US persons. The US taxes the interest as ordinary income.

Cash ISAs
Compare with other providersMetro Bank's cash ISA conditions are being 18 or over with a National Insurance number and UK residence, plus a visa or residence permit if you are not a UK, EU, EEA or Swiss national. The ISA terms carry no US-person exclusion. The IRS still taxes the interest as US income, as the wrapper gives no US relief.

Compare with other providersUS persons: income paid in dollars is not accepted, and you need permanent rights to reside
Metro Bank never mentions citizenship, so the barrier is your visa and your pay packet rather than your passport. Its criteria require permanent rights to reside in the UK and state that foreign currency income is not accepted, and holders of a skilled worker or family visa are capped at 75% loan to value.

Why this is the rule
FATCA
FATCA makes UK banks report accounts held by US persons to the IRS. It is not a tax; it is a reporting trail. Where it bites is access.
TaxFBAR
If your foreign accounts top $10,000 combined at any point in the year, you file an FBAR. What counts, when it is due, and what happens if you miss it.
TaxISA US tax
The IRS does not recognise the ISA wrapper. Cash ISA interest and stocks ISA gains are taxable on your US return, and fund holdings drag in PFIC rules.
