Which Halifax accounts accept US citizens

Last checked

Halifax has been checked for US citizens across 7 account types. 5 are open to a US person (1 with strings) and 2 are closed.

If you already have an account with Halifax, a second one there is usually the easier application, because Halifax has already checked who you are. Each account below carries its verdict, the evidence behind it and the date it was checked.

Halifax asks that you are 18 or over and resident in the UK, with no tax-residency test and no US exclusion. The Halifax brand is moving to Lloyds, so applicants who do not use the Halifax app are being pointed at Lloyds accounts.

Halifax asks only that you are 16 or over and resident in the UK, with no sole-tax-residency wording and no US-person bar; most accounts open without a Halifax current account. Note the FSCS limit is shared with Bank of Scotland, so holding money at both does not double your cover. The US taxes the interest as ordinary income.

Halifax asks that you are 18 or over, resident in the UK for tax purposes and have a National Insurance number. Its conditions repeat the statutory test and add only the Crown employee extension. The IRS still taxes the interest as US income, as the wrapper gives no US relief.

To open any account you must not be a US person, a US citizen, or US tax resident by any other route. That is a citizenship test, so living here does not help. Note that Halifax, Lloyds and Scottish Widows all run on the same platform and share this exact clause, so shopping between them on price achieves nothing if you are American.

Halifax puts a citizenship test in its eligibility list beside the residence one, requiring that you are not a US person, a US citizen, or US tax resident by any other route. Both tests must be met, so living in Britain does not rescue it.

The most permissive high street lender here on immigration, and it is worth reading the exact wording: once you meet its residency test there is no requirement to hold a particular type of visa, and no minimum validity left on it. That test is permanent right to reside, or five years in the UK, or one year on £50,000 income alone or £75,000 jointly, which reaches 95% loan to value. Fail all three and you are held to 75%. It takes a dollar salary with a fifth knocked off. Note this is Bank of Scotland plc trading as Halifax, the same book that writes new Lloyds mortgages, so the three brands are one chance rather than three.

US persons: app only for existing Halifax customers, and everyone else is sent to Lloyds

Halifax asks only that you are a UK resident aged 18 or over with a regular income, so citizenship is irrelevant here too. The live barrier is the brand move to Lloyds: new applications run through the Halifax app for people already registered for its online banking, and everyone else is pointed at Lloyds, which wants three years of UK address history.
