Which Chip accounts accept US citizens

Last checked

Chip has been checked for US citizens across 4 account types. 1 is open to a US person and 3 are closed.

If you already have an account with Chip, a second one there is usually the easier application, because Chip has already checked who you are. Each account below carries its verdict, the evidence behind it and the date it was checked.

Chip opens its savings accounts to any UK tax resident aged 18 or over, with no US-person bar; the 'tax only in the UK' rule that blocks its cash ISA does not apply here. The US taxes the interest as ordinary income.

Chip requires you to pay tax only in the UK, so it will not open its cash ISA for a US person. The wrapper gives a US person no relief anyway, since the IRS taxes the interest as ordinary income.

Another split between documents. Chip's ISA key features ask only whether you are 18 and UK resident, while the platform terms carry the real test: it can provide the platform only if you are not a US person, and it reserves the right to close the account once you stop meeting that. No individual shares are offered, so the whole range is PFICs anyway.

Chip has chosen not to accept US persons, or anyone not solely UK tax resident, as customers. The forward-looking clause is the worse half: if you later become a US person you must tell Chip and the account will need to be closed, which lands on someone who naturalises years after opening.
